ORA
The limits of the planet
A performance of live video mapping and original music featuring sounds from Space and Earth
ORA THE PLANET'S LIMITS is the new performance project by Imaginarium (Francesca Pasquinucci and Davide Giannoni), who signs storytelling, drawings, animation, direction, and original musical compositions.
Art and science meet in this tale for video mapping and music about what scholars call "planetary limits," or those thresholds that humanity should not cross to prevent the Earth from collapsing. Nine fundamental environmental processes by which the planet
Self-regulates.
A project realized with the support and scientific contributions of ESA European Space Agency, ASI Italian Space Agency, EGO European Gravitational Observatory and, INGV National Institute of Geophysics and V u l c a n o l o g y, entities and institutes that have made available to the Studio incredible "sounds" from space and underground. Fundamental were the exchanges and meetings with physicists, climatologists, and space experts, which allowed Imaginarium to build a poetic narrative steeped in surreal art based on solid scientific concepts.
ORA il concept
The thresholds that humanity should not exceed to prevent the Earth from collapsing are called "planetary limits."
Nine fundamental environmental processes by which the planet regulates itself.
INTRODUCTION
1 / CLIMATE CHANGE
Cities in chaos, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and polluted seas alternate with the perception of a cosmic "serenity." We are catapulted into a dimension of total "disharmony," canceling the Platonic ideals of "Harmony of the spheres" and of every virtuous thought aimed at the natural balance of Earth and Space, now gone
She was lost due to the immeasurable actions of man.
Time is up; man has exceeded every "limit."
2 / LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY
Among the significant causes of biodiversity loss, we find the growing use of fossil fuels and the industrialization of agriculture.
NATURE'S TIME and MAN'S TIME are no longer aligned. Man has become a machine that proceeds at an extreme speed, following its rhythm that overturns the rules of the SPACE OF THE POSSIBLE, and every action is no longer sustainable. Initially, the music builds a fantastic Natural Radio. Colors and shapes arise from the perfect composition of groups of animals and plants, representing the maximum expression of the beauty of the balance of biodiversity. Suddenly, however, the radio begins to lose visual harmony, and the compositions undergo uneven changes, giving us the dystopian vision of a lost instrument. The rhythm is broken, lost. Man, through the use of knobs, has accelerated Nature's time to align it with him, causing the imbalance of species and biodiversity.
3 /CHANGES TO THE NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS CYCLES
Chemical fertilizers and the large-scale use of nitrogen and phosphorus are destroying a gigantic swarm of bees. Man has completely distorted the natural nitrogen and phosphorus cycle, severely affecting land and sea animals and the waters. Scientists define the limit on releasing N2 into the atmosphere as a "giant's valve" that controls a massive flow of nitrogen throughout the year. “Our” giant is now battered, adrift. He can no longer manage his nitrogen flows, and his body is exploding, risking the inevitable escape of poisonous gases.
4 / LAND EXPLOITATION
The giant's head presents itself to living beings one last time. It still has a composition of natural elements and virtuous engineering parts, but the transformation of the face into a destructive machine is underway. A machine that emits harmful gases non-stop.
5 / CHEMICAL POLLUTION
The giant's new face is that of a mad chemist who creates a sort of psychedelic hell. A hallucinogenic assembly line, a crazy laboratory, moves behind, in, and through the diabolical mechanical face of a “being” who has become proud and greedy.
6 / AVAILABILITY OF FRESH WATER
7 / OCEAN ACIDIFICATION
The water is BLUE GOLD. The cascades of water share the scene with skyscrapers made of sheet metal and scraps of metal and plastic materials, immersed in modified vegetation, still looking for a breath. When the waters recede, because vital resources begin to run low, they are followed by the latest biological forms
Remained.
The water loses all its life forms, and what remains is enclosed in the only precious remaining bubble.
8 / DESTRUCTION OF THE OZONE LAYER
9 / CONCENTRATION OF ATMOSPHERIC AEROSOLS
The dystopian buildings are transformed into gigantic spray cans, which we discover are still the homes of human beings. The canisters spray large quantities of gas, accompanying unregulated emissions from industrial chimneys and machines.
The ozone layer is modified and corroded, and ultraviolet rays, crossing the barrier, remove all energy from the life forms on the move.
Planetary limits have been exceeded, and life on Earth has collapsed.
